Sub-THz polymer microwave fibers for data links in evolved 5G and 6G base stations

27 October, 2022

Yinggang Li (Ericsson) presented data links for future radio base stations based on sub-THz polymer microwave fibers IET Colloquium on Millimetre-wave and Terahertz Engineering and Technology (18. – 19. October 2022). The invited talk discussed the potential benefits using polymer microwave fibers (PMF). The development of a proof-of-concept demonstrator system at sub-THz carrier frequency was presented based on the work carried out in an EU Horizon 2020 project Car2Tera. Furthermore, the talk offered the opportunity to share simulated and experimental results.

The video below shows the soldering process for flip-chip mounting of the eWLB chip at Ericsson, with perfect match between solder paste and the micro-bumps with fine pitch. It applies eWLB technology in D-band (up to 170 GHz) in a standard SMA process. Preliminary test results show that the eWLB attachment is successful.
